A month-long leave of absence from work lead me to travel to Cebu City. It is referred to as the South's Queen City. 24 years ago, I traveled to Basilica Minore del Santo Niño. It felt like a blessing to here again. Along with its delicious food, it is well known for its rich history, stunning beaches, and steadfast Catholic religion. One of the most significant landmarks in the city, the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño, attracts both pilgrims and tourists. 




An Invaluable Historical Discovery

One of the well-known religious locations in the Philippines is the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño, which was established in 1565 under the direction of Spanish explorer Miguel Lopez de Legazpi. It is acknowledged as the nation's oldest Roman Catholic church. The church houses the venerated image of Santo Niño, a figure of the Child Jesus that was gifted to the local queen in 1521 by Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan. Many people consider this depiction of Jesus as a child to be miraculous.  by a large number of Catholic Filipinos. Today, many pilgrims including me, my daughter and sister were able to get near Santo Niño. But, taking a photo is strictly prohibited in the area.

The basilica's architecture combines both modern and traditional elements, showcasing its rich historical legacy while also embracing contemporary design. The courtyard itself is a vast, open space, often bustling with activity, especially during religious celebrations and the annual Sinulog Festival, which honors the Santo Niño. Due to so many people attending holy mass every Sunday, the streets going to this place is usually close.

Experiencing the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño firsthand is an unforgettable journey. The basilica is a storehouse of Cebu's history and culture in addition to being a place of worship. Inside, a stunning altar holds the centuries-old picture of Santo Niño, where devotees gather to worship and ask for graces. The basilica also has a museum that holds a variety of religious relics, such as historical objects, church records, and vestments dating back centuries.

Discovering the basilica and its environs offers a profound understanding of Cebu's spiritual and cultural landscape. Many of the faithful attend the daily masses offered in the basilica, and they frequently light candles and offer prayers in the spaces designated for that purpose.

**Dress Code**: Wearing of sleeveless and shorts are strictly prohibited inside the church.
